The NFL kicked off its season in exciting fashion last night, pitting 2008’s two best AFC teams against one another. The Pittsburgh Steelers needed overtime to defeat the Tennessee Titans in a classic, hard-nosed game. Neither team was able to do too much on offense, especially on the ground. The Titans were especially stingy against the running game, as the Steelers managed just 36 rushing yards on 23 plays, an average of 1.6 yards per play. The Titans did not fare all that well on the ground either, amassing just 86 yards on 25 plays.
It looked like there would be no need for overtime when Ben Roethlisberger connected with Hines Ward with just under a minute to play in the fourth quarter to put them in range for a go-ahead field goal, but Ward was stripped by Titans safety Michael Griffin, giving Tennessee possession. The Titans ran out the clock to try their luck in overtime. Unfortunately for them, the Titans did not have luck on their side as they lost the coin toss. Roethlisberger drove the team down the field with relative ease for Jeff Reed’s game-winning kick to seal the deal 13-10.
