Jags Ready to Growl Again

July 31, 2009

Just two years ago the Jaguars were one of the best teams in the AFC and looked to be a threat to make a run to the Super Bowl at any time.  But injuries and team chemistry issues plagued their 2008 season and the club finished with a disappointing 5-11 record, good for last place in the AFC South.  Head coach Jack Del Rio is determined to lead this team in a bounce-back campaign in 2009.  “Two years ago we had the best locker room I’ve ever been around, and then last year it kind of spoiled on us,” Del Rio said.  ”We’ll get it back.  That’s coaching.  I’ve talked to a few coaches and they say, ‘Hey, there are years like that.  Sometimes it all clicks and you’ve got a rabbit’s foot in your pocket, and some years you have tough sledding.’”

The Jaguars have a solid makeup on both sides of the ball and could be in line for a return to prominence in the conference.  A lot of the team’s success will rest on the shoulders of an offensive line that was battered for the bulk of last season.  If the line can hold up, running back Maurice Jones-Drew could be in line for a huge year, as Fred Taylor won’t be stealing carries from him.  It’s the culture change in Jacksonville that should help the team the most, as they’ve gone to great lengths to cleanse the team of any troublemakers.
