This could finally be the year that the San Francisco 49ers break out and become a playoff contender again. Head coach Mike Singletary showed the impact that he can have on the team’s mentality during his interim stint last season. Singletary is bringing a throwback vibe to the locker room and will focus on running the ball and playing defense on the field. This team has some talent on both sides of the ball and could be set to make some real noise under the leadership of Singletary. The roster actually looks to fit his approach to the game and the team could be in for a big season.
The offense will center around running back Frank Gore, whose hard running style and versatility make him very attractive for a run and short pass-oriented offense. The team has some young wide receivers like Josh Morgan and rookie Michael Crabtree, but they’ll need to develop and remain consistent for the passing game to thrive. Tight end Vernon David has reportedly become a new man under the tutelage of Singletary and could finally be ready to use his incredible gifts. I think former number one pick Alex Smith has a good chance to win the starting quarterback job and lead this team. He seems like the kind of intelligent player that could develop into a Chad Pennington-type signal caller, which is exactly what a team like this would need. Singletary is sure to have the defense performing up to their potential, and if the offense comes together, 2009 could be a real bounce-back season for this franchise.
