Packers to Extend Jennings

June 24, 2009

Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings was one of the league’s best bargains last season, getting paid approximately a half a million dollars for nearly 1300 yards and nine touchdowns.  It looks like that bargain is all but over, though, as it looks like the team is on the verge of extending the 25-year-old receiver.  “According to a source, Jennings could make $27 million in new money with the deal, but if he performs at a Pro Bowl level, his new contract could be worth as much as $30 million,” writes ESPN’s John Clayton.  ”Jennings was in the last year of his rookie contract and was scheduled to make $535,000.”

Jennings has been better-than-expected in each of his three seasons since the Packers drafted him out of Western Michigan.  Jennings’s receptions and receiving yards have increased over the course of his three campaigns and he’s scored 21 touchdowns in the past two seasons combined.  He appears to be the favorite target of budding quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who also enjoys weapons like Donald Driver and James Jones.  Jones has a ton of talent as well and he and Jennings could eventually form one of the more dangerous receiving duos in the conference.
