Smith on the Comeback Trail

June 30, 2009

Failing to meet expectations in the first few years after being the number one pick would make things hard enough on a player, let alone having to deal with a close friend’s suicide at the same time.  Well San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith had to deal with both last preseason as he was trying to win the 49ers starting quarterback job.  Smith was also recovering from a shoulder injury that was still giving him a lot of pain and affecting his performance on the field.  After he failed to win the job, most people wrote him off as a bust.

Now Smith has recovered, both physically and mentally, and is again vying for the starting job in San Fran.  He’s throwing the ball better than ever and has a confidence about him that he hasn’t exhibited since being drafted first overall by the team.  Smith will battle Shaun Hill for the starting job this preseason, and Smith definitely has a shot to win this thing.  He’s an intelligent quarterback with the talent of a number one pick, so he’s definitely got the potential to be a solid starter for the Niners.  One can’t help but root for a guy who has gone through some tough times.
