Steeling One in OT

September 30, 2008

After a first half that was utterly dominated by the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers swung the game in their favor in a matter of seconds.  After a third quarter touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes put the Steelers within striking distance, the defense came up big, forcing a fumble from Ravens’ rookie quarterback Joe Flacco that was picked up and returned for a touchdown.  The 14-point swing came in a matter of 15 seconds and stole all of the momentum that the Ravens had built with their stellar first half play.

The Ravens showed some grit, though, driving down the field for a game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter.  The Steelers got their big play from Mewelde Moore in overtime that set up the game-winning field goal, resulting in a final score of 23-20.  Mewelde Moore was the primary running back at this time in the game because starter Willie Parker did not dress and backup Rashard Mendenhall received a broken shoulder at the hands of Ray Lewis.  The injury seemed oddly fitting for the rookie who had sent a text message to Ravens running back Ray Rice that he was going to have a big day against one of the most stout run defenses in the league.
