Kyle Boller has been named the starter for the Ravens’ first preseason game against the New England Patriots. Rookie head coach John Harbaugh said his decision to give Boller the nod was based on seniority and experience. Boller has started 42 NFL games in his six-year career, all of which has been spent in Baltimore.
This blogger still believes that Boller could be a quality starter in the NFL. He’s shown flashes in the past but hasn’t been able to remain consistent enough to keep his job. His competition for the starting gig in Baltimore consists of second-year QB Troy Smith and rookie Joe Flacco. The Ravens took Flacco in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft and figures to be Boller’s primary competition for the job. Boller has the physical tools to be an NFL quarterback, there’s no doubt about that. Where Boller has struggled is in making sure the little things are taken care of and in his mental makeup. His decision-making has been questionable at times and he’s had a habit of letting little things go wrong, like fumbling the snap. Boller has a good opportunity to make his claim to the starting role thanks primarily to the inexperience of both Smith and Flacco, but it could be his last.
