The Dallas Cowboys are now, if not before, the clear favorite in the NFC. After beating their main competition for the consensus NFC favorite son, the Green Bay Packers, on Thursday Night Football, you can expect to see Dallas’ star rise in the weekly rankings and polls. Will they be #2 to the Pats? We will have to wait until Tuesday to find out. The game was pretty good for a nationally televised NFL matchup. The Packers were within three points at the start of the fourth quarter. However, Farve was not in the game to lead a comeback, so Romo got the win by default.
Since it’s Friday at the Super Bowl Blog you should have fun with some sports news. TheOnion.com has some very clever and funny sports articles to read for today. Personally I like the Ricky Williams article, because I blogged about the man earlier this week, and I find his actual story to be compelling and worth paying attention to. The title is “Ricky Williams Most Lucid Dolphin On Field,” and it gets the Super Bowl Blog’s Blog Subject of the Week Award. Have fun at the games you are attending this weekend, and if you don’t already have tickets, get them soon.

If you are looking at the upcoming games this weekend in the NFL and licking your chops about all of the great matchups, then you aren’t alone. The NFL Week 13 games are all beauties—at least in the eyes of the Super Bowl Blog. If there were one game that this blogger would most like to get tickets to see, it would certainly be the Dallas-Green Bay game, played right in the heart of Texas. These two teams are the clear elites in the NFC, so this is a game that could be a preview of the NFC Championship if everything continues as it has. The Cowboys are powered by a young QB named Tony Romo, who’s probably going to be a star in the league for a long time. The Packers, obviously, are quarterbacked by the legendary Brett Farve, who has been an NFL star for ages. This should be a shootout- though it’s not getting the hype that Pats-Colts did a few weeks ago.
There are other awesome games to see as well. You’ve got Jacksonville-Indianapolis, a rematch from a few weeks ago that should be another battle between two playoff teams. Then there’s the Bears-Giants, two teams that could also meet in the playoffs if things go according to plan. New England and Baltimore is the Monday Night Game. Let’s hope it is as close as the Pats game last week.

Ricky Williams came back to play for his old team, the Miami Dolphins, for one game. But it appears that his return will be short lived, as reports indicate that he has a chest muscle injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season. One of his arms will have to be in a sling, and that’s not going to help him keep hold of the football. This is clearly very disappointing for Ricky Williams, who was hopeful that he could successfully revive his football career after being suspended for a rule violation. If you’re a fan of Williams, then you have to feel bad for the guy. The Super Bowl blog is rooting for him and hoping that he can return to action next year, on the right path, healthy and as entertaining as ever.
The news is even worse for Miami Dolphins fans, who are desperate for something to break their streak of losing. Williams might have helped the situation, but that option is done for now. Even though the Miami defense gave an inspiring performance the other day on Monday night Football, this team still needs to find a way to get into the end zone more frequently. Let’s hope that both Williams and the Dolphins can turn things around very soon.

If you would have told the winless Dolphins that they were going to hold the potent Pittsburgh offense, complete with Super Bowl winner Ben Roethlisberger and one of the leading rushers in the NFL, Willie Parker, to just three points on Monday Night Football, they probably would have been ecstatic. However, Miami was able to keep the Steelers out of the end zone the whole game, holding Pittsburgh to just three points. That field goal was enough to topple the Dolphins, though. Miami is now a reverse-perfect 0-11 on the year. The whole game was pretty ugly. In fact, it was the lowest scoring game in Monday Night Football history, and the announcers were going back 50+ years to find a football game that went as long as the Steelers-Dolphins without a score. The field was sloppy, players couldn’t get traction, and nobody was taking many shots down the field. Not much for watching, but a win is a win for Steelers fans.
On a more somber note, news of the death of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor is coming in today. Taylor was only 24 years-old, and was one of the best defensive backs in the league. He was shot by an intruder who entered his Miami home. Let’s all keep Taylor and his family in our thoughts as they attempt to get through this tragedy.

Pittsburgh and Miami will play in tonight’s Monday Night Football game to close out Week 12, but there’s already been two days of great action this week, as three games were played on Thanksgiving day. Probably the most highly anticipated game on the holiday was Detroit versus Green Bay, a Frozen North rivalry game. Green Bay ended up winning fairly comfortably by the end, though. Indy rolled over a weaker Atlanta. And before gobbling down on some turkey plenty of families watched as Dallas beat up on the New York Jets.
This Sunday saw some great NFL games as well. The Patriots seem to always catch the headlines, but this time they did it because they were in danger of losing to the Philadelphia Eagles (even though QB Donovan McNabb was out of the game). The Pats came through in the end, of course, and now they’re a perfect 11-0. Perhaps the most exciting game of the weekend was the overtime game between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners pulled it out in the end after Frank Gore finally got going. Denver and Chicago also went into overtime, and the Bears won on a field goal to keep their playoff hopes alive.

There’s a lot of Atlanta Falcons news out there right now. If you count the continuing saga of Michael Vick’s prison sentence as a Falcons story, then the whole sports world is focused on the ATL NFL team. Vick recently began his prison sentence and there are all sorts of stories about what his life will be like in prison, especially on the internet. Since this Super Bowl blog is about to take a holiday break for Turkey Day, let’s try to focus on the good news with the Falcons… or at leas the news that’s not overtly bad.
Joey Harrington has been given the keys to the Atlanta offense in their upcoming game. The Falcons are switching QBs for the fourth time in their last five games. Last week they went with Byron Leftwich, but for their Thanksgiving game against the powerful Indianapolis Colts they are going with Harrington. It should be a great game if you have tickets to see it. There are going to be three different NFL games played on Thanksgiving. The Lions and Cowboys, the two traditional Thanksgiving teams, will play the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets, respectively. If you aren’t going to one of those games, then it’s going to be a fine day to watch football on TV. Enjoy your Thanksgiving meal, and the Super Bowl blog will see you back on Monday!

If you were lucky enough to get tickets to the Cleveland-Baltimore game this past Sunday, then you were treated to an especially nice finish. Actually, you got two finishes. The first came when the Browns lost in regulation on the missed field goal attempt by Cleveland kicker Phil Dawson. The second came after the call on the kick was overturned upon review. The game went into overtime, and the Browns eventually won on another Phil Dawson field goal, though the one after regulation was not as hard to determine. The controversy is about the kick that sent the game to overtime. Technically, field goals are not up for review after-the-fact. Even though it was clear that the kick was good by the replays, the refs are not, legally, supposed to look at replays for field goals. The debate goes on. Though the call was fair, the way it was handled is getting fans on both sides of the argument all fired up.
In other news, the Broncos beat the Titans on Monday Night Football last night. It was a great night to be rooting for the Broncos, as their four touchdowns were all on plays of 40 yards or longer. Well done, Denver. At 5-5 they are now tied for the AFC West lead. The Titans move to 6-4.

Week Eleven will be in the books tonight when the Tennessee Titans play the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football. It was a great weekend for watching games, though. Hopefully you got your tickets to see some intense battles go down. As usual the New England Patriots made the headlines this weekend. The fact that they pounded the weaker Buffalo Bills shouldn’t have been too news-worthy, except that the Patriots never simply beat a team, they always do it in a way that either makes us sit back in awe or stew in our bitterness. This time they took the Bills out by scoring on seven consecutive possessions to open up the game. The final score read 56-10.
Green Bay and Dallas continued to roll in the NFC. Indianapolis stopped their skid by beating the Kansas City Chiefs 13-10 with a last-second field goal. It was ugly for most of the game, but the Colts managed to get back in the win column. Tonight’s Denver-Tennessee game could be one of the best this week. Both teams have young quarterbacks with a lot of potential. Will Vince Young outrun the Broncos’ D, or will Jay Cutler cut up the Titans’ secondary? If you got tickets, then consider yourself lucky. Otherwise, try to forget that it’s Monday with a little pigskin and a delivered pizza tonight.

Ricky Williams might be returning to play for the Miami Dolphins. He has arrived at the Miami Dolphins facility and has applied to be reinstated in the National Football League. The main story here is that at 0-9 the Dolphins might be willing to take William back. If you know the Williams story so far, then you know why this is a big deal. Williams was one of the best college football running backs in history with the Texas Longhorns, then he played well in the NFL, even led the league in rushing yards one year. But he had several run-ins with the NFL’s drug policy (the good kind, if there is such a thing), and, over the course of a long process, he has been away from the NFL for a while. He played in the Canadian Football League last year, and he should have the skills, the size, the ability to be an NFL running back… so long as he can keep in the game.
Will Williams be the same rusher? Has he lost some speed or tenacity? Can the Dolphins use him? All will be sorted out quickly, and there’s definitely some interesting fantasy football situations that could develop if Williams gets the ball a lot- assuming that he starts playing for the Dolphins. You should also add into the equation that the Dolphins have a new QB this weekend, the rookie John Beck. The addition of a brand new QB and a reinstated RB could significantly change the dynamic of the Miami offense.

The Miami Dolphins are 0-9 right now, but things could be looking better in the future due to a quarterback change. The Dolphins have elected to start John Beck, their first round draft pick, in their upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Beck gets the call after Trent Green struggled and suffered and injury and Cleo Lemon failed to produce adequate results. Beck was the third quarterback taken in the NFL draft this past year. Picked over him were DaMarcus Russell from LSU and Brady Quinn from Notre Dame. However, at 26 years old some experts thought that Beck was this class’ most likely to immediately succeed. Miami football fans hope that the experts are right about Beck, because he will have his hands full this weekend.
The Dolphins are planning on starting Beck for the remainder of their games this season, barring any unforeseen events. Even though many people see the move as an incitement of Cleo Lemon’s performance, coaches have also commented on the good stuff they’ve seen from Lemon in practices. Will this be the one thing that the Dolphins need to do to get better? Probably not. There are a few obvious problem areas for Miami this year and the quarterback slot is only one of them. Still, Miami can’t be accused of being too complaisant. With the way the season has gone so far, there’s nowhere to go but up. Good luck, John Beck! You might want to start thinking about possible Fantasy Football moves to get this guy.
